Hispanic Heritage Month is a wonderful opportunity to introduce your students to Spanish-speaking countries and notable figures. However, celebrating Hispanic heritage shouldn’t be limited to just one month—it’s something we can embrace and enjoy all year long! Here are some exciting, interactive ideas to keep your students engaged and learning during Hispanic Heritage Month and beyond.
Introduction to Hispanic Leaders: Choose a few Hispanic leaders to introduce in your classes, and write a short biography for novice learners that includes their name, country of origin, birthdate, and profession. You can use circling and personalized questions (PQA) to ensure your students understand and can make connections with each other. I highly recommend you to introduce two characters at a time and do a comprehension activity after the reading. My favorite is the yoga comprehension activity.
Famous Figures Guessing Game: Who Am I? This activity sparks curiosity and excitement while introducing students to influential Hispanic and Latinx figures. Create a Guess Who-style game with clues about famous people from history, science, sports, art, and entertainment. You can reuse the same figures from the previous activity.
I like to chant the words: Adivina, adivina… ¿Quién soy yo? Soy un líder, soy un líder hispano.
I give them a clue: Me llamo, me llamo… L. If the students guess correctly, I show them the third slide, revealing the Hispanic leader. If they don’t guess, I give them another clue: Es de Argentina.
Once the students guess, I reveal the picture and move on to the next one.
Printable Biographies Project: Have your students create a printable project where they write about the famous Hispanic figures they’ve studied. Use these to create a bulletin board to showcase the students’ work.
Movement Game: My students love the game “Hispanos,” and we play it not just during Hispanic Heritage Month, but throughout the year. I have a wall where I display flags from Spanish-speaking countries, and I often ask questions like: “How many colors are on the Colombian flag?” “Which countries have blue in their flags?” “How many countries around the world speak Spanish?
